Designed primarily as a forum for debate, it was within the pages of the Associationalist that the bitter arguments which were to explode at the 3rd AA International Conference began to gather steam.

Carrington was excoriated by Accidentalist activists on the assumption that the title of his journal expressed his philosophical opinions. In fact, the title was simply chosen for the sake of brevity. Carrington: "It was almost called The Accidentalist but the quarter came up heads."
